When I was in Greece on vacation, I fell in love with this Greek pastry named Bougatsa. It consists of a warm vanilla cream pastry, wrapped in phyllo dough and topped with icing sugar and cinnamon. It just warms your heart honestly hahaha.
Ingredients :
1 litre of milk
250 g of sugar
250 g of fine couscous
3 eggs
A splash of vanilla extract
8 phyllo dough sheets
50 g of melted butter
Icing sugar and cinnamon for dusting at the end
Instructions :
Heat up the milk in a saucepan and bring to a boil
In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, couscous, vanilla, eggs and set aside
When the milk is starting to boil, pour in the ingredients and mix all together in the saucepan until the mixture thickens
When it does, pour into a glass bowl and set aside to cool
Start heating up your oven at 180 degrees Celsius
In a round pan, place 4 sheets of phyllo dough, being sure to brush melted butter in between each sheet, and especially between the pan and the first sheet
Add in the mixture
Place the remaining 4 sheets of phyllo dough on top, buttering in between each sheet
Place in the oven to bake for 20 min
When finished baking, dust the top with icing sugar and cinnamon (mixed together)
Let cool before cutting and serving (it should be eaten warm but not hot)
